Open Data Albania is investigating the Price, Quantity and Value of Sale and Purchase of Electricity in Albania 2015-2020. For 2020, a total of 5,314,811 MWh of electricity were produced or 2% more compared to 2019. By type, the largest production of electricity comes as a result of hydro sources about 99% and only 1% of electricity is produced from other renewable sources. Despite the increase of production capacities, the year 2020 is considered a bad hydrological year, as the total production of this year is about 15% less than the average production of electricity in the period 2015-2020. This situation affects the Import and Export of Electricity.

During 2020, about 25% more gross quantities of GWh of Electricity were exported from Albania to other countries compared to 2019. At the same time, Gross Import (energy received) marked the value of 3,239 GWh or 2% more in 2020 then compared to 2019. As a result, the Exchange of Electricity obtained as the difference between exports and gross imports of energy has increased by 5.4% compared to 2019, a result that shows the deficit in the electricity, however the balance trade result still remains in negative values or a deficit situation for 2020.

For 2020, the Export of Electricity marked the value of 13 776 000 Euros while the Import of Electricity reached the value of 69 146 000 Euros. With these official data published by INSTAT, ERE, and the International Trade Center, if we evaluate the purchase price and the sale price of electricity, it turns out that Albania has sold electricity at an average price of 14.3 Euro / MWh, and has bought energy at an average price of 21.35 Euro/MWh. So for 2020, the purchase price of electricity has been higher than the selling price of electricity per MWh. If we refer to the following graph, for the period 2015-2020, the average export price of electricity has been unstable, while in 2020 it has decreased. The average price of electricity imports in recent years has fluctuated slightly. However, for 2020, there has been an increase and it has been higher than the export price.

A significant difference is also observed in the electricity tariff paid by household and non-household customers. Household customers include those customers who have an annual energy consumption between 2500-5000 kWh. While non-household customers are considered consumers consuming between 500-2000 MWh.

The following graph shows the prices of electricity before tax (VAT) for Household Customers for 2020 in the countries of the region. The average price of electricity for household customers for the countries of the region is 10.36 ALL/kWh, while the average price of electricity for household customers for the countries of the European Union is 15.49 ALL/kWh. It is noticed that Albania has the average annual price of electricity for household consumers, higher than the countries of the region, with about 11.96 ALL/kWh, followed by Montenegro with 9.88 ALL/kWh; Northern Macedonia 8.40 ALL/kWh; Serbia with 6.83 ALL/kWh and Kosovo with 6.86 ALL/kWh.

The electricity system in Albania consists of the production, transmission and distribution of electricity for ensuring the supply of electricity for the customers. The production of electricity is realized by the companies KESH sh.a. and HPP Lanabregas sh.a. with 100% of state shares, as well as by licenced private and concessionary entities.  Meanwhile, the transmission of electricity is realized by the Transmission System Operator sh.a (OST), while the distribution of electricity is performed by the Distribution System Operator sh.a.

In the Open Corporates Albania database, the section for Concessionary Companies includes passports for medium and small energy production companies through Hydro Plants.
