Export and Import of Electricity in Albania, January – August 2021

Open Data Albania is researching the electricity market indicators in Albania, for the 8-month period January-August 2021. During this period, Albania had a total Gross Export (energy exported) of 2,309,783 MWh and a total of imported energy of 910,122 MWh.

The decline in gross electricity exports has started in the first quarter of this year, namely since March 2021, where electricity supply fell by 37% compared to February. After a slight increase in exports in April-May, again electricity exports suffered a significant decline, amounting to 83,482 MWh in August, or 46% less compared to July 2021.

At the same time, in the first quarter of the year, respectively in March 2021, there was an increase of 185% of gross imports of electricity, an increase which continued steadily in the following months. In August, Albania imported 357,410 MWh of electricity, deepening the trade deficit of electricity.

For the period January-August 2021, Net Domestic Production marked the value of 7,089,029 MWh of electricity or 92% more compared to the 8-month year of 2020. KESH sh.a constitutes about 61% of the total production and 39% of the total production is provided by other energy producers. By type, during this period the largest production of electricity comes as a result of hydro resources by about 99.5% and only 0.5% of electricity is produced from other renewable sources.

In terms of electricity consumption during this period, in Albania were consumed a total of 5,689,382 MWh of electricity or about 14% more compared to the same period of 2020. Electricity consumption refers to the use by household and non-household customers and the amount of losses in the electricity network.
