Capital Origin for business companies registered in 2019

Open Corporates Albania is a database created and maintained by AIS. This database has published data about Business Companies registered from 1 January to 31 December 2019. These data and the relevant documents are easily accessed through passports disclosing their identity, scope of activity, managerial structure, owners over the years, capital values, performance and legal issues characterizing their business. Such passports link also the data on tenders and payments made by the State Treasury to the respective companies. This article provides aggregate data about business companies by the origin of their capital, i.e. by country of origin of the capital owners. This information helps understand economic and trade interests such as ease of doing business in Albania. The increase of foreign investors doing business in the country shows a favorable business climate, as well as opportunities for transferring different economic sectors to our country.

In 2019, there were 3291 (three thousand and twenty hundred and ninety-one) business companies registered in the country as shareholders companies (SHA) and companies with limited liabilities (SHPK). Thus, 897 of them or 27% of the total number are established with fully foreign capital. The foreign capital used in establishing these companies amounts to 912 639 988 (nine hundred and twelve million and six hundred and thirty-nine thousand and nine hundred and eighty-eight) leke or 10.17% of the total capital of the companies founded in 2019. In 2019, the total capital of foreign or domestic-owned companies was 8 970 697 393 (eight billion and nine hundred and seventy million and six hundred and ninety-seven thousand and three hundred and ninety-three) leke. In addition to the fully foreign capital companies, there are also 228 companies with mixed (Albanian and foreign capital) founder. While 85.5% of the capital of the companies founded in our country is domestic capital (Albanian owners).

If we look at the countries of origin of the companies founded in 2019, Italy is on the top with 461 companies or 14% of the total number of companies established this year. Italy is followed by Egypt with 52 companies, Kosovo with 47, and Turkey with 40. Our neighbor, Greece, is known as a foreign investor in the country over the past few years, and remains at the level of only 14 companies established during 2019. There are also companies from farther places like Syria, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Iraq, Yemen, etc.

In terms of continents, the European one holds the highest number of companies established in 2019. Asia is next with 154 and Africa with 73 companies.

The list of companies founded by foreign owners in 2019 is provided on the Excel table linked to this article, while passports with well-structured information on the companies established during 2019 are accessible on the Open Corporate Albania portal. The database search engine enables users to search for companies and get their list by their name, owners, former owners, type of activity, origin of capital, capital value, founding year, status, and the company’s licenses.

Open Data Albania is also publishing other indicators linked to the business companies registered during 2019. Indicators show the origin of the capital of these companies. i.e. whether it is local or foreign by the country of origin of their owners; the distribution of companies by regions, their legal status in the first year of registration, and by type of ownership. i.e. private or state ownership.

Open Corporates Albania is an open data base, with easily accessible information on business companies operating in the country.
