Open Data Albania is researching the accreditation of higher education institutions and study programs in Albania.

Data for this article were obtained from the Quality Assurance Agency in Higher Education (ASCAL) and from the General Directorate of Accreditation (DPA).

Accreditation is a quality assessment procedure in higher education that ASCAL uses based on national and European standards. Institution or Study Programs are evaluated following this procedure. There are cases when an institution is not accredited, but has a number of accredited programs, or when an institution itself  is accredited, while its programs might be still nonaccredited.

In Albania, a total of 67 institutions are licensed as Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Currently, only 40 of the HEIs are active, the other 27 institutions are closed. There are 50 Non-Public Institutions, while there are only 17 Public (state) institutions, 2 of which are closed. There are currently 12 public universities and 3 public academies.
