Open Corporates Albania is a database created and maintained by the AIS organization. In the present article we are disclosing information regarding Business Companies, based on their Origin of Capital, i.e. meaning the Business owners’ country of origin. This information helps to understand who holds economic and commercial interests in Albania and serves as an indicator on how easy it is to do business in the country. The increase in foreign investors doing business in the country outwardly shows a favorable business climate, as well as high chances for the transferring of various economic sectors to our country. In 2023, 4,125 (four hundred and five) business companies were registered in the country in the form of Joint-Stock Companies (JSC) and Limited Liabilities Companies (LLC). 914 of them were with foreign capital or 22.16% of the total number of companies. The capital size of companies established in 2023 with foreign capital is ALL 12 412 348 382 (twelve billion four hundred twelve million three hundred forty-eight thousand three hundred eighty-two) Albanian Lek or set against the total capital of the companies established last year, the share is 50.55% foreign. In 2023 the overall capital of companies established with either foreign or domestic ownership is ALL 24 556 376 944 (twenty-four billion five hundred fifty-six million three hundred seventy-six thousand nine hundred forty-fourth). In addition to companies with foreign capital, there are 217 companies with mixed Albanian and foreign capital. Whereas a portion of 46.04% of the capital of the companies established in our country in 2023 is local (Albanian citizen owners).

If we look at the countries from which the owners of these newly established companies originate, Italy comes in first place with a number of 386 companies or 9.36% of the total companies founded during last year. Italy accounts for over 39% of the total capital established, although the largest company reports capital in kind. Italy is followed by Turkey with 94 companies, Kosovo 79 and Germany with 34. Our neighbor Greece, known as a foreign investor in the country during the previous years, remains at the level of only 10 companies established during 2023. There are also companies from other more distant countries, such as Syria, Bangladesh, Kuwait, Yemen, etc.

If grouped by Continent, companies with European Origin of Capital founded in 2023 are more numerous. Asia follows with 54 companies and then North America with 29 companies. 

The list of entities founded by foreign owners, based on the country of origin for 2023 can be found complete in the Excel accompanying this article, while the passport with well-structured information of the companies founded during 2023 can be accessed on the Open Corporates Albania platform. The database search engine makes it possible to search and list companies by name, owners, former owners, type of activity, origin of capital, value of capital, year of establishment, status, company licenses. 

Open Data Albania is also publishing other indicators related to business companies registered during the year 2023. The indicators disclose the origin of the companies’ capital as domestic or foreign capital, based on the owner’s origin; distribution of companies by district; based on their legal form, based on the status in the first year of registration and based on the private or state ownership.
