Open Data Albania is analyzing the structure of bank shareholders’ capital by Origin of Ownership for commercial banks.
As origin, we have considered the country or business register where the controlling shareholder is registered for legal persons, or the declared nationality for individual shareholders, whether directly or ultimately declared.
As of July 2025, the banking system counts 11 (eleven) licensed Commercial banks operating in the market. Seven banks have entirely foreign capital, two banks have mixed shareholder capital (foreign and domestic), and two banks are entirely domestically owned.
The total shareholder capital of banks in Albania reached ALL 102.6 billion in July 2025, marking an increase of 6.2% (or approximately ALL 6 billion) compared to the end of 2024 (ALL 96.6 billion).
According to the origin of the owners:
- Foreign shareholders’ capital represents 73.6% of total shareholders’ capital in financial institutions – banks, or ALL 75.5 billion.
- Domestic Owned shareholders’ capital represents 26.4%, or ALL 27.1 billion.

The data show that approximately 37.8% of total bank shareholders’ capital in Albania is owned by shareholders’ originating from EU Member States, specifically ALL 38.7 billion. This accounts for 51.3% of total foreign-owned bank shareholders’ capital.
Meanwhile, foreign-origin shareholders’ capital from non-EU countries represents 35.8% of total banking shareholders’ capital, or ALL 36.7 billion. Within this structure, the largest share is held by shareholders’ capital owned by shareholder’s originating from Turkey, followed by other jurisdictions outside the EU.

Turkish origin shareholders’ capital holds the highest share in the bank shareholders’ capital structure in Albania, with ALL 32.99 billion, or 32.2% of total shareholders’ capital in the Albanian banking sector.
In second place is shareholders’ capital originating from the Austrian business register, with ALL 14.18 billion, representing 13.8% of the total.
Next are: Hungary with ALL 6.74 billion (6.6%), Germany with ALL 6.20 billion (6.0%), Italy with ALL 5.56 billion (5.4%).
The origin of controlling shareholders’ registered in the Netherlands business registry amounts to ALL 3.66 billion, or 3.6% of total shareholders’ capital, while Bulgarian-owned shareholders’ capital is ALL 1.52 billion (1.5%).
Shareholders’ Capital held by controlling shareholders’ registered in jurisdictions such as Delaware and the Cayman Islands represents 2.7% and 0.7% of total shareholders’ capital respectively, highlighting that in the beneficiary ownership declaration, the beneficial ownership still identifies a majority Albanian national.
Meanwhile, controlling shareholders’ capital directly registered in North Macedonia and Saudi Arabia represents 0.3% and 0.02% of banking shareholders’ capital respectively.
Domestic-origin shareholders’ capital accounts for 26.4% of the total, or ALL 27.1 billion.

In a breakdown by continent of the beneficiary origin capital:
- Europe represents the highest share, with approximately 51.7% of foreign bank shareholders’ capital in Albania
- Asia (Eurasia) ranks second with approximately 43.8%
- USA (North America) accounts for around 4.6% of foreign shareholders’ capital.

Banka Kombëtare Tregtare (BKT) is the bank with the highest shareholders’ capital value in the banking system, with ALL 32.99 billion, representing 32.2% of total shareholders’ capital. BKT is owned by Çalık Holding A.Ş., a Turkish corporation active in the finance, energy, and construction sectors.
Raiffeisen Bank Albania ranks second with ALL 14.18 billion, or 13.8% of bank shareholders’ capital, owned by Raiffeisen Bank International AG, registered in Austria.
Credins Bank holds third place with ALL 18.65 billion, representing 18.2% of total bank shareholders’ capital. Credins has a mixed shareholders’ capital structure, where 75.7% is domestically owned, and the remaining part by companies registered in the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
The top three banks with the highest shareholders’ capital jointly represent approximately 64.2% of total shareholders’ capital in the country’s banking sector.

OTP Bank Albania ranks fourth with ALL 6.74 billion, accounting for 6.6% of total shareholders’ capital, owned by OTP Bank Nyrt, registered in Hungary.
Tirana Bank, with a shareholders’ capital of ALL 5.92 billion (5.8%), is a bank with domestic-origin shareholders’ capital.
ProCredit Bank represents 6.0% of total banking shareholders’ capital. This bank is owned by ProCredit Holding AG & Co. KGaA, headquartered in Germany.
Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Albania has a shareholders’ capital of ALL 5.56 billion, representing 5.4% of the total, and is part of the Italian banking group Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A.
Union Bank is the second bank with entirely domestic origin, with shareholders’ capital of ALL 3.88 billion or 3.8% of the total.

American Bank of Investments (ABI) has a shareholders’ capital of ALL 3.45 billion, representing 3.4% of total banking shareholders’ capital.
Although according to the Register of Beneficial Owners, the beneficial owner of 80% of ABI’s shareholders’ capital is Mr. Andi Ballta, with declared Albanian nationality, the shareholders’ capital of this bank is classified as foreign, since the owners of Tranzit, the company that controls 100% of ABI’s shares, are legal entities registered in Delaware (80%) and the Cayman Islands (20%).
United Bank of Albania (UBA) has shareholders’ capital of ALL 3.49 billion, with the majority of shares owned domestically (91.8%), and the remainder held by shareholders from North Macedonia (7.45%) and Saudi Arabia (0.72%).
First Investment Bank Albania (Fibank Albania), with shareholders’ capital of ALL 1.52 billion (1.5%), is the bank with the lowest shareholders’ capital value in the market. The controlling shareholders is held by its parent company First Investment Bank AD, registered in Bulgaria.
