The unemployment rate is the ratio between the number of registered unemployed individuals and the individuals currently in the labor force. The labor force refers to the share of the working age population (in Albania from 16 years old to retirement) who are either in a job or actively looking for one.

Data by gender concerning the unemployment rate give the distribution between the unemployed men and women taking part in the labor force. According to these data, in 2009 the unemployment rate among women is 15.9%, while among men only 12.2%. This gender difference can be noticed throughout the last decade:

As it can be seen from the graph, the difference between the unemployment rates of women and men has been about 6%, except in the three last years. In 2007, for the first time, this relation is broken, with more unemployed individuals among men than among women.
