Use of electricity is one of the parameters that enables us to analyze the efficiency of the utilization of the electric energy. Total sources of electricity serve one or more of the following main categories: consumers, export, and losses in the grid.

As years have gone by, the strucutre of use as changed. From a ratio of Losses/Consumers of 1.4/1 (for every 100 kwh that was being used by the consumers, 140 kwh were losses in the grid) in 1998, the use of electricity by consumers gained increasingly. In 2002, this ratio was 0.54/1 and in 2010 0.47/1. The lower ratio translates in growing efficiency of the use of electricity. Nevertheless, since this ratio is mainly a result of the increased consumption rather than decreased losses, the efficiency of use continues to remain very low.

After 2008, a higher consumption is noticeable. Compared with 2007, it was 14% higher, and in 2009 and 2010 it was respectively 3% and 7% higher. Such increase is primarily due to fewer interruptions, which after 2009 have been almost zero, thus the increase of consumption cannot be equal to the increase of demand for electricity.

Export is the third important category of the use of electricity. Because our country relies on hydric sources to produce electricity, the years with levels of precipitation have enabled higher exports. The data used by Open Data Albania takes into account energy exports including exports resulting from exchange agreements. According to the graph, year 2010 was the most favorable to export given the high domestic production.
