The private sector that produces electricity mades up a small market and still has a low impact in the overall production of electricity in our country. Although after 2008 the number of private companies operating in this market has increased, the data shows that they are still far from being an important factor.

Presently the private market is made up by small HEC-s which are privatized or given on concession.

In 2009 and 2010 the quantity of electricity produced by small HEC-s, especially those given on concession has grown tremendously. In 2009 this quantity is 44% higher than in 2008, whereas in 2010-the increase was 78%.

Despite the positive steps production by private HEC-s accounts for only 2% of the total production. Still, given that in recent years more concessions are granted it is expected that the weight of the private sector will continue to grow further.

Until 2010 there were 51 Hydropower Plants in operation, owned by 19 companies. Menawhile according to the Statistical Bulletin of 2009, published by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Energy only during 2007-2009 87 concessional contracts have been signed, for a total number of 208 HEC-s. The investment value of these soon-to-operate HEC-s  is about 238 billion leke, and the energy produced is expected to reach 4214 GWh. When these HEC-s will start production our country should be in a good position to permanently and in the most efficient way solve the issue of electricity supply.
