Albania’s population according to gender and age group

It is often said that the world has more women than men. In fact a carefool look would show that there are very few countries where women make up more than 52% of the overall population, e.g. Swizterland, Armenia, Belarus). On average, worldwide, in 2009 only 49.59% of the population are women. In the European Union this indicator reaches 51.16%.
Albania falls in this range as well. In 1998-2010 ratio of women vs men has been in the 49.8%-50.17% range. On average there are about 99.99 women for every 100 men, or about 1:1.

In 1998, there were about 12.246 more men than women or 0.8% more. Over years the ratio changed and the number of women grew taking this difference to about 11,000. After this time period the number of men has been steadily increasing and in 2010 there were 16.400 more men than women in Albania.

Interesting is the fact tha men dominate the age groups 0-24 years and 50-69 years. Women dominat the age groups 25-49 years and over 70 years. The latter shows that the lifespan of women is higher that that of men.

Studying the age groups is important for the demographic analysis of a country. In its study Open Data Albania has considered three groups: 0-14 years, 15-64 years and over 65 years. This separation is made primarily for ease of classification and analysis.

The graph shows an inverse relationship between the two extremes of the spectrum. The percentage of the 0-14 age group vs the total population decreases every year, whereas the percentage of 65 and above increases. This reflects the ageing of the popualtion which is gaining relevance in our country as well. The small number of births is contributing to this factor and will show its impact in future generations.
At the same time, the incrase of over 65 popualtion must serve as an alert for the government to start creating proactive social policies and efficient pension schemes.
