We refer to “Enterprise” as an economic term by meaning any entity that performs an economic activity, regardless of its legal form. Here is excluded: public administration, non-profit organizations and international organizations.
Open Data Albania has conducted a research on the structure of enterprises according to their size. In the context of this research, enterprises are classified into: micro-enterprises with 1-4 employees, small enterprises with 5-9 employees, medium enterprises with 10-49 employees and large enterprises with 50 employees and above.

According to this classification, in 2010 we have the following results:

In 2010, the number of large enterprises operating in Albania is resulted to be 843, constituting 0.84% of the total of 100,687 enterprises. Meanwhile, there are 91,566 enterprises with 1-4 employees, covering 91% of the total. Enterprises with 5-9 employees constitute 5% of the total, while medium enterprises share 3% of the total.

The number of enterprises has changed with growing rhythms for the 2006-2008 interval, proceeding with decreasing rhythms in 2009-2010. This decline is a result of the global economic crisis which showed its effects also in Albania, leading to bankruptcy and closure of many enterprises, as well as creating obstacles for new businesses establishment.

Enterprises with 1-4 employees are affected the most by the economic crisis, being reduced in number by 6.47%. From 2009 to 2010 the number of these enterprises declined by 6634. Meanwhile medium and large enterprises have increased in number during 2009.
