Birth rate over time, 1960 – 2009

Open Data Albania has conducted a research on birth rate in Albania for the period of time 1960–2009, based on World Banka data. Crude birth rate indicates the number of live births occurring during the year, per 1,000 population estimated at midyear. Year 2009 marks the lowest level of birth rate for Albanians, with 12.8 births per 1000 inhabitants. This indicator has been steadily declining, especially in comparison to the year 1960 where the birth rate was 40.8 births per 1000 inhabitants.

Birth rate in Albania for 2009 is lower (12.8 births per 1000 inhabitants) than the world average of 19.71 births per 1000 inhabitants. While this difference relative to the world average has deepened especially in the last 10 years.

Countries with higher birth rate in region are Kosovo and Turkey with respectively 18.76 and 18.17 births per 1000 inhabitants. Neighbor countries like Macedonia, Italy and Bulgaria have lower birth rates compared to Albania.

Based on the indicator of birth rate per 1000 inhabitants, Albania compares to European countries like Belgium. Meanwhile, Kosovo stands much higher with a satisfactory number of deliveries and closer to the world average.
