Open Data Albania is realizing a research on the passengers? number flying to the unique airport in Albania, Airport “Mother Teresa” in Rinas. Research has considered the number of passengers of each airline. The purpose of analysis beside passenger trend over the years is also the evaluation of weight that operating airlines have in the domestic market.

In time frame 2005-2012 the number of passengers recorded a dynamic growth, partly as a result of the liberalization of the visa regime and the new regime of movement in the Schengen area for citizens of the Republic of Albania. The trend has been increasing up to 2011, declining only in 2012, where the total number of passengers decreased by 8.5% compared with the total number of passengers a year ago.

Developments in the number of flights and passengers from year 2005 are reflected in air traffic movements that reflect the movement of aircrafts in the airspace of Albania. At the end of 2012 there was recorded 20,528 air traffic movements (flights) in our area, with a decrease of 10.7% compared to a year ago.

According to Open Data Albania research, based on data of passenger number, flights airline market by number of passengers at the end of 2012 was dominated by the local company Belle Air. This company, during 2012, has carried out flights for more than the half of Rinas airport passengers. During this year, it shared 50.1% of the flight market. Every other company in the market is much smaller versus BelleAir, specifically Alitalia and Air One, by each, has reached to only 9.6% of the total passenger number.

Rinas Airport, nowadays called Tirana International Airport “Mother Teresa” was built during the period 1955 -1957. Since 2005, the airport is managed through concession contract with the government for 20-year period, from Tirana International Airport, Hochtief Airport HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH, Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellschaft BMH (DEG) and the Albanian-American Enterprise Fund (FSHAN).
