Municipal solid waste and inert waste in the years 2003-2012

Open Data Albania is investigating the amount of municipal solid and inert waste, taking into consideration their performance in the years 2003-2012 and the splitting at regional level. Currently, in our country prevails the disposal of waste in dump sites, inappropriate for their storage and handling, while until 2011 only two landfills operated throughout the country (Sharra in Tirana and Bushat in Shkodra). While in the case of communes, waste dumping continues through the slopes of rivers or burning in open fields, a characteristic in many cases for cities too.

Municipal solid waste have increased rapidly until 2010, while after this year the growth appears to be slower, with about 0.83% in 2011 and 5.4% in 2012. According to the figures, municipal solid waste in 2012 are around 1.1 million tones, or 3 times more than in 2003.

For the waste at the regional level, in the first place there is Tirana, with 383 thousand tons, followed by Durres, Fier and Vlora. Interestingly, in 2012 a declining trend of solid waste is shown in Kukes (20.8%), Tirana (7.5%), Korce (4.7%), Fier (3.1%) and Berat (2.2%). With the highest growth there is Durres, with 47.6%, followed by Elbasan (25.6%), Shkodra (25.3%), Lezha (22%) and Vlora (17%).

Regarding inert waste, the performance is presented differently. After 2005, a gradual decline can be noted, which stops in 2010. This year marks the highest decline of inert waste, 28.3% compared to 2009 and also the lowest level for the entire period. The situation reported in 2011 differs, where inert waste has doubled compared to 2010 and reaches a peak for all years from 2003 to 2012.

The district with the highest waste for 2011 was Vlora, with 235.7 thousand tons, followed by Tirana with 190.5 thousand tons and Berat with 92.7 thousand tons.

In 2012 the situation changes again. Inert waste are as half of 2011, reaching 332 thousand tons. However, in 2012, Vlora continues to have the highest level of inert waste, with 178 thousand tons. Second ranked there is Berat, 5 times less than Vlora (34 thousand tons) and Gjirokastra (21 thousand tons).
