Open Data Albania has conducted a research on the capital of commercial banks operating in the country. The data are updated by the management and publishing procedure of company?s data in the National Registration Center NRC. The data were analyzed in two dates. Date of establishment of each as a commercial bank, and the date May 1, 2014 as the date of valuation of the extracts from NRC. In the analysis of ODA are only considering capital increases that are audited, recorded and published in the National Registration Center. The process of registration and publication in the center constitutes an act with legal consequences for business organizations.

Second Level Banks are commercial banks that accept deposit cash or other repayable funds from the public and use them to extend credit and issue payment instruments in the form of electronic money. Branches of foreign banks are those foreign banks that carry out banking and financial activity in the Republic of Albania, through their branch. In Albania, there are sixteen second level banks or branches of foreign banks.

The charter capital invested in the startup activity of all banks active in Albania amounts 6.12 billion ALL. The bank with the highest charter capital is ?Banka e Bashkuar e Shqipërisë? (United Bank of Albania) with 2.94 billion ALL invested in the establishment. Its activity started in May 1999. This is also the only bank that has marked reduction of the charter capital in the exercise of its activity in years.

On May 1, 2014 the charter capital for all banks is estimated to be 103.38 billion or translated at the exchange rate of this date 1.01 billion USD or 737 million Euros. The bank with the largest capital on that date is Tirana Bank with respectively 15.2 billion ALL of capital.

The Increase of the capital from banks is an action that enables them to be better positioned in order to face external shocks of any kind, whether they are economic, financial and geopolitical and therefore increases the reliability of depositors. The largest growth of capital, based on the documentation of the NRC since the start of the banking activity until May 1, 2014, has been the Bank of Tirana. Its capital has increased 7,612 in eighteen years operating in the market. On the other hand, ?Banka e Bashkuar e Shqipërisë? (United Bank of Albania) has proceeded with the reduction in its charter capital by 40%.

On the 31th of December 2013, deposits in Second Level Banks amount to 950 billion ALL, Treasury bills were 246 billion ALL and Remittances 70 billion ALL. The charter capital dated 12.31.2013 that amounted to 99.4 billion ALL, covers 10.5% of Deposit or 40.4% of Treasury Bills. Actual capital represents 142% of remittances.
