Open Corporates Albania is a database created and maintained by AIS. This database has published data about Business Companies registered from 1 January to 31 December 2019. These data and the relevant documents are easily accessed through passports disclosing their identity, scope of activity, managerial structure, owners over the years, capital values, performance and legal issues characterizing their business. Such passports link also the data on tenders and payments made by the State Treasury to the respective companies. This article provides data about the gender representation of the owners and administrators of these companies. The gender ratio is identified based on the number of companies and the capital owned by men and women owners.

Business companies established in 2019, with 100% of their capital owned by one gender only. In 2019, there were 3291 (three thousand and twenty hundred and ninety-one) business companies registered in the country as shareholders companies (SHA) and companies with limited liabilities (SHPK). Women own 100% of the capital of 405 companies (or 12.31% of the total). Men own 100% of the capital of 2305 companies (or 70.4% of the total companies) established in 2019. The rest of the companies established in 2019, i.e. 578 companies, or 17.65% of the total are owned by legal entities or by a mixture of owners (individuals and companies).

If we calculate the number and weight of the companies, whose more than 50% of the capital is owned by one gender group, data show that women own more than 50% of company capital in 14.31% of the cases, while men in 74.26% of the cases. The rest of the companies, where over 50% of the capital is owned by legal entities or mixed owners, none of the two gender groups own 50% of the capital.

The total capital owned by women compared to the total capital of the companies founded in 2019 seems to be a minority. In this case, we also calculated the gender representation in companies, where one gender group owns less than 50% of the company capital, i.e. any capital owned by women in companies founded in 2019. The companies founded and registered at the National Business Centre during 2019 have a share capital and quotas equal to 8 970 697 392.82 (eight billion and nine hundred and seventy million and six hu8ndred and ninety-seven thousand and three hundred and eighty-two point eighty-two) leke. This capital is owned by female shareholders or partners in the amount of 582 218 205 (five hundred and eighty-two million and two hundred and eighteen thousand and two hundred and five leke). This corresponds to only 6.49% of the total. Men own 27.09 per cent, while the remaining 26.29% is owned by legal entities.

Another statistical indicator that we are exploring for the business companies registered during 2019 is also the number or share of the business companies whose management is entrusted to women. Out of 3291 companies founded, only 605 or 18.38% are managed by women. Eighty per cent of the companies established in 2019 is managed by men.
