Open Data Albania is analyzing several indicators on infection and riskiness or mortality from Sars-CoV- 2. The main indicator, which will serve as a basis for comparison between countries is mortality the virus. The latter will be measured as the ratio of confirmed deaths by against the number of confirmed cases with Covid-19. The data for this article was obtained from Our World in Data platform and reflect the situation up until the first week of April 2022. Therefore, it should be clear that the analysis is based on officially confirmed and reported data.

But, not all cases of infection have a laboratory confirmation; testing is what distinguishes between the number of confirmed cases and the real ones. Due to limited testing, the number of confirmed cases is lower than the actual number of infections. This deepens in some countries that have not performed well with testing, especially in the first months of the pandemic.

About 495 million inhabitants or 6% of the population have been confirmed as affected by Covid-19 worldwide. According to prevalence reports, North America and Europe are among the most affected continents, with 26% and 24% of the population respectively confirmed with Covid-19.

Globally it is confirmed that about 6.17 million inhabitants have lost their lives to the coronavirus disease, of which 1.8 million are European. The continent with the highest fatality rate is South America with an estimated mortality rate of about 2.3%, of the affected cases, followed by Africa with 2.2%, North America 1.5%. According to reports of confirmed cases in Europe, the average mortality rate from Covid-19 is estimated at around 1%, while worldwide fatality is higher, around 1.2%.

Albania results in a higher mortality rate from Covid-19 than the European and the world average, at 1.3% rate. As mentioned, this estimation is based only on official statistics, in which only patients who died in Covid hospitals, after testing positive were considered dead by coronavirus. In Albania, there are officially 3 492 (three thousand four hundred and ninety two) confirmed deaths from Covid-19 out of 274,055 (two hundred and seventy four thousand) cases confirmed with Covid-19.

Thus, 10% of the population in Albania has been officially confirmed to be affected by Covid-19.

The countries with the highest mortality rate from Covid -19 on the European continent are the Balkan countries.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has the highest mortality rate in Europe at around 4.2%, followed by Balkan countries such as Bulgaria at 3.2% and Macedonia at 3%.

Despite the aggressiveness of the infection and the consequences it brought, the worldwide infection rate fluctuates at low levels, not exceeding 6% of the affected population. While in the continent it is reported infection at higher levels about 25%, so 1 in 4 European inhabitants has been confirmed as affected at least one time by coronavirus.

Although the spread of the pandemic is higher in neighboring countries than in Albania, such as Montenegro, Italy, Spain, Greece, these countries have lower mortality rates, with Montenegro 1.2%, Italy 1.1%, Spain and Greece with 0.9% each.

Likewise, an estimation of mortality by Covid-19 for every 100,000 inhabitants, turns out that the Balkan countries are more afflicted than the average of European countries.
