Open Data Albania has conducted a reseach on the number of traffic accidents in Albania, as well as the number of injured in these accidents, based on data provided by INSTAT. Starting with year 1995, the number of traficc related accidents and injuries has varied as follows in the chart below:

As you can see in the chart, there were 1,564 traffic accidents in Albania during 2010, as a result of which 2,069 people were injured, with 353 resulting in fatalities. The numbers reflect a continuous increase in the number of accidents as a result of problems with traffic signals and signs, and failure to respect the safety code by the drivers and pedestrians.

Historically, the year with less accidents was 2002 with 328 accidents. Even though the road infrastructure has seen improvemets in recent years, year 2010 remains the record year with the highest number of accidents and injuries. Compared to 2009 the number of accidents grew by 7%, and the number of injuries by 13%.

According to the data, there were 39 accidents per 10,000 vehicles during 2010.
