Open Data Albania has conducted a research related to the economic enterprises operating in Kosovo according to the size and economic activity they exercise. An enterprise as an economic term includes any entity that carries out an economic activity. The data used in the research were obtained from the Statistical Register of Businesses in Kosovo.

According to the size, enterprises in Kosovo are classified as micro-enterprises with 1 to 9 employees, small enterprises with 10 to 49 employees, medium enterprises 50 to 249 employees and large enterprises with over 250 employees.

In 2013, according to the Statistical Register for Businesses, there are 9,358 micro-enterprises, 55 small enterprises, 7 medium and 1 large. During this year, 99.3% of enterprises had one to nine employees. The number of micro enterprises during the period 2010-2012 has increased, to decrease then in 2013, when there were registered 137 micro-enterprises less than in 2012.

Of the total number of enterprises in 2013, the economic activity most preferred by investors appears to be “Wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, personal and household goods” with respectively 2,849 active enterprises out of a total of 9,421.

Other sectors preferred in the Republic of Kosovo are: “Real estate, renting and business activities” with 1,056 enterprises, “Manufacturing” with 942 enterprises, “Construction” with 932 enterprises, “Hotels and restaurants” with 909 enterprises etc. Private households enterprises with employees results as the less preferred sector in Kosovo.
