Open Data is probing into the domestic net production of Electricity data, regarding both Public and Private Producers, as well as Concessionair companies. The data was extracted from the Energy Regulatory Entity (ERE) Electricity Market Reports for the January-August 2022 period. Currently, domestic electricity production consists of two main components:

  • The production carried out by companies with state capital, like KESH sh.a. and Lanabregas sh.a., whose shares are 100% state owned, as well as
  • Production carried out by other private and concessionary entities producing Electricity.

For the January-August 2022 period, it appears that the total net domestic production of Electricity is 4,628,043 MWh, or about 35% less compared to the same 8-months period in 2021 (7,089,030 MWh were produced in total). In October 2022, we notice a is a decrease in KESH’s contribution to electricity production by about 43.3%, compared again to the same period in 2021.

For the first 8-months of 2022, the amount of 2,434,477 MWh or about 52.6% of the total energy produced was carried out by HPPs owned by the public company KESH sh.a (Fierzë HPP, Koman HPP  and Vau Dejës HPP). Meanwhile, an amount of 2,154,412 MWh or 46.6% was produced by private and concessionary HPPs, and only a small amount of 39,154 MWh or 0.8% of the total electricity produced was generated by photovoltaic plants.

The highest level of production was recorded in the month of January 2022, with about 795,079 MWh, while the lowest amount of electricity produced was recorded in the month of June with almost half of that, 380,551 MWh.

The burden, in the total electricity produced, fell mostly to the public hydropower plants Fierze, Koman and Vau Dejës, who produced a comined 52.6% of the total.

Whereas, the private and concession hydropower plants account for about 46.5% of the total electricity produced, where the Moglica HPP accounts for about 5.76% of domestic electricity production, followed by Ulëza, Shkopet, Bistrica 1,2 HPP’s with 5.16% të totalit, followed further by Fangu HPP with around  3.17% and finally, Ashta HPP accounting for 3.09% of the total amont of Electricity produced domestically.

Based on Producer Entities, the largest electricity manufacturing company in the country is KESH sh.a. with 100% state capital, which, during the first 8th months of 2022, secured the largest amount of electricity supply, provided by Koman HPP, Fierza HPP and Vaut Deja HPP, with a combined 52.6% of the total amount of electricity produced or an amount of 2,434,477 MWh.

Meanwhile, in the private sector, the largest amount of electricity produced comes from the Devoll Hydropower sh.a concessionaire company with 395,634 MWh energy produced or 11% of the total. The Devoll Hydropower company operates the Banja and Moglica hydropower plants, whose  Concession Contract was signed with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy in 2008, undergoing changes and extentions in 2010, 2013, 2014. Kurum International sha is a company that produces electricity curtesy of the four Hydropower Plants: Ulza, Shkopeti, Bistrica 1 and 2, she owns. During the 8th month perod in 2022, this company has provided an electricity supply of 238,826 MWh.

Another concession company that ranks among the 10 companies with the highest electricity production is Ayen As Energji sha,  which operates Peshqesh and Fangu hydropower plants. The combined production of these two hydropower plants for the 8 month period is 203,261 MWh.

Energji Ashta sh.p.k. is another important company in terms of hydro production in the country, having supplied 42,990MWh of electricity throughout the first 8th months period in 2022. The company is currently carrying through the concession for the purpose of Construction, Ownership, Use and Transfer of the Ashta Hydropower Plant.
