The Gender Gap of the Average Wage in Albania, the Region and Europe

Open Data Albania is examining the gender pay gap in Albania, in the Region, as well as EU. The study also aims to shed light on the gender gap among younger people, namely under 25 years old. The data assessed for the purpose of this article were obtained from the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) and the European Institute of Statistics (EUROSTAT).

In 2021, in the Republic of Albania is observed an average gross salary of 57,191 ALL per employee, a value 6.6% higher than that of 2020. It should be also taken into consideration that in 2021 in Albania the minimum salary limit increased from 26,000 ALL to 30,000 ALL.

In a more in-depth analysis of the average salary based on the economic activity, as determined by the Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NVE) for the year 2021, it appears that the best paid sector is the Financial and Insurance Activities Sector. In this sector, men received an average salary of 125,890 ALL, whereas women earned 105,532 ALL.

The second best paid category appears to be Information and Communication activities, where men received an average salary of ALL 91,126, while women earned ALL 80,579.

The sectors in which women seem to be better paid on average are the Construction sector and that of Public Administration and Defense; compulsory social insurance; education; health and social work activities.

Eurostat analyzes the Gender Gap indicator of the average salary in Albania and European countries for 2018. This indicator calculates the rate, in percentage, by which the average salary of the male gender exceed those of the female gender. In the calculation of this indicator, the economic activities defined in the Nomenclature of Economic Activities (NVE) are taken into consideration.

In 2018, according to Eurostat, men in Albania were paid 6.8% more than women, ranking Albania fifth among European countries with the lowest gender gap regarding the average monthly salary.
